Syriana

Instead of harmless vampire action Underworld: Evolution, my brother decided for us to watch Syriana , despite my foreboding that this might be a somewhat difficult movie…

Turns out, I was right. You get George Clooney & Matt Damon and also well known faces of Chris Cooper and Christopher Plummer, but you just don’t get a Hollywood blockbuster. The movie has got 4 connected storylines about the U.S.’s economical and political interests in oil and gas resources of a small emirate at the Persian Gulf. At times, you really have got to pay close attention to keep up with characters, their intentions and dialogue.

And the Oscar goes to… George Clooney for best actor in a supporting role. This film has got no leading role in the first place !! If you liked Traffic by same writer / director Stephen Gaghan, Syriana is also a movie for you.

“Syriana” by the way is a Washington-used term describing a hypothetical reshaping of the Middle East. The way the U.S. want it, that is.

True to the movie’s tagline “everything is connected”: Jeffrey Wright portrays Felix Leiter in upcoming Casino Royale (Bond, James Bond again). And Prince Nasir Al-Subaai really is Doc Bashir of Star Trek: DS9 ( Alexander Siddig ). It’s such a small world.
